The material culture of the Aboriginals is limited to a few objects, reflecting their lives as hunter-gatherers. In addition to the purely spiritual churingas, important objects include boomerangs, spears, spear-throwing devices (woomera), clubs (nulla nulla) and shields (woonda) and these are all multifunctional. A boomerang, for example, could be used not only to hunt animals but also to dig for ants or water. Shields were not just a means of defence or a vessel at ceremonies but were also used by Aboriginals in central Australia to fan the flames of a fire. To increase their impact, shields and other functional objects were “decorated” with totemic patterns. This again reflects the belief in being connected with the spiritual world, with Dreamtime, and has nothing to do with the European idea of decoration or personal creativity. In Aboriginal rituals, churingas held a very special position.
